Resource Centre

The resource centre is managed by Resource Librarian. The Resource Library is currently in the process of registering all the books onto an automated library system. Once all the books are recorded in the STAR School Database, we will be able to automate the borrowing procedure from manual to automatic using our bar code scanner. The barcode process will be a time-consuming process but it will give us more time to spend with students to teach them more about resource selection and research skills.

Grade 3-7 students have a 30 min slot to visit the library to attend lessons, borrow a book and return the book they have read. The students are encouraged to read more than one book and return them in the morning or afternoons when the Resource library is open for exchange. 

Students are able to use the library facility for research as well as the ICT Lab. We have made a facility available to students to print, copy, scan and bind their projects onsite to enhance the services for our community.

The extended reading books are visible in Grade 1-2 where students donate books to the classroom reading corners. These books are informally recorded as they come and go and get replaced on a frequent basis due to the age of the users. The Grade 3-7 students have a formal reading set and the sets are rotated between classrooms on a regular basis. There are more than adequate reading books in the school as well as in the Remedial and Shona department with more specialist reading for Shona L1 students to enhance their reading skills.

Resource Centre Curriculum

The classroom textbook resources are carefully aligned with CHISZ, ZIMSEC and Cambridge. Where textbooks are not available in Zimbabwe, the best alternative resources are identified and selected by Academics Heads.

The resource and ICT department is managed by Mr. Muvhunzwi and provides Curriculum guidelines, policies and procedures. She equips teachers and manages the budget for resource allocation. Monitoring and advising GCTC on ICT personal development for Gateway staff and course selection is also part of her portfolio.

We aim to foster a love for books in Gateway’s children, no matter the child’s academic level, and to teach good stewardship and provide careful but open-minded learning about God’s world through reading, within the safety of Gateway’s Christian environment;

To show children the proper use of library resources and facilities, instilling them with skills to be used later in life and in further education;

To complement the ICT programme within the school by providing access to online and other electronic resources for students and staff.

Research Facility
The resource centre provides access to research in hard cover books in the library or online research in the ICT Lab. A timetable for research is communicated to all students Grade 3-7.

Grade 1-2 has an in-class library supporting reading needs of students in class. Resources are provided / donated by parents and are not selected but reviewed on donation to establish if it's appropriate for as a in-class resource. Material that is not appropriate will be send to the Resource centre or re-donated to other schools with other value systems.

The Resource Centre this term has set aside a section in the Library that will provide resources for Gateway parents. This is in an effort to equip parents with the necessary skills and tools for effective parenting. To begin with, those parents who are keen to access resources can see Ms Vosloo in the library on Wednesday and Friday afternoons between 2:30 and 3:30 pm to register. There is no joining fee required and books are signed out for two weeks. We will also have a book swap facility available whereby a parent can bring a “book for a book”. These should be inspirational books that can encourage and challenge fellow parents.

Phase 1:

  1. New updated curriculum notification.
  2. Teachers review existing resources for compliance to updated curriculum (Cambridge or Zimsec or CHISZ)
  3. Teachers submit the resource form to communicate any resources required to their Head of Department.
  4. Head of Departments establish if they have the funding within that year's budget.
  5. Funding proposal for any additional resources not procured within the required year gets submitted to the Headmaster for budget review for the following financial year.

Phase 2: Resource Selection

Once the funding is made available the quotations are reviewed for the following criteria:
- Availability of Resources in Zimbabwe. (Imported resources are not duty free and tax free) Zimsec publishing house required a minimum of 5000 copies to be ordered to update any new releases (Zimbabwe Goverment has not yet released these copies for a number of years for some subjects). Keeping in mind that some of the printed books in Zimbabwe for Education were not approved by our local Educational Departments.
- Resources approved by Cambridge are identified.
- An annual budget is allocated for:

  • Grade 1-3 Resources (Managed by Infants Head - B. Rowley)
  • Textbooks for Grade 4-7 (Managed by Academic Head - S. Mutsaka)
  • Resource books for Resource Centre (Library- Managed by A Muvhunzwi)

The demographic Survey assists us in reviewing our annual student representation at Gateway Primary and guides us on what resources would be procured only if available in Zimbabwe.
